Want Black Oxide to run through CNC toolholder, not be a surface finish

Q. I am manufacturer of Tool holders.
I want to do good aesthetic black oxidation of the tool holders.
I want to set up my own plant and would like to know about the black oxidation process wherein the blackening should be of change in the colour of basic steel material rather than deposition that goes away with time.

I want to know the supplier of such equipment set and the supplier of chemicals required.

A. There is no such process!

A. Manufacture the tool holders by powder metallurgy. Then either
1.) Steam-treat the sintered steel part. This fills the porosity with magnetite Fe3O4, which also improves corrosion and wear resistance, or
2.) Have the sintered steel part black oxided. Be sure to tell the operator to do extra rinsing and agitation in each step.

You could also get a dark color, and high hardness, by incorporating a dark carbide powder in the powder metal part.

These are specialized processes. Have prototypes done by manufacturers of powder metallurgy parts and make sure the parts meet mechanical requirements in addition to coloration. You would not want to invest money unless certain of the outcome.

A. Blackening is an oxidation process that may also go away with time and become red rust depending on conditions such as humidity, wear, salinity, etc. There are several deposition processes that will easily outlast the best black oxide and will not "go away with time".

Corrosion resistant plating for CNC Toolholders

Q. I'd like to know if there is coating process to coat CNC toolholders after the finish grinding operations on the tool taper and internal diameters.

The coating thickness to be achieved to be 0.002 mm or less.

NOTE: Toolholders are subjected to grinding process after black oxidation.

Thanks.
Abhi.

A. Hi Abhi. Salt bath nitriding (or other nitriding processes) could give a nice black color while also offering case hardness and corrosion resistance. Good luck.

A. I would suggest ENP, which appears very cool with satin finish and would also offer Scratch resistance as well as hardness to the tool Holders.
