What metal finish is best for our application?
I am writing from a small technology development company on Vancouver Island. We are currently developing a farebox. The internal structure of our farebox is an 11"x11"x40" mild steel weldment. We would like to finish this framework with a thin inexpensive coating that will protect against corrosion and wear (there are several moving parts). Looks are not important, we are simply looking for functionality and cost savings. Any suggestions on the most appropriate metal finish for our application?
Thanks alot, I appreciate the help!

Zinc plating or autophoretic coatings are inexpensive and offer good corrosion resistance. Designing for wear resistance, though, can be a little more complex and depend upon the specifics of the wear situation. A more exotic coating like teflon or electroless nickel may be required on those parts.
