Tellling Galvanising from Electroplating
How to find out a component whether it is electroplated or galvanized.

Hot dip galvanizing gives a zinc coating from about 2 mils thick to about 10 mils thick (51 microns to 254 microns). Electroplate zinc is normally much thinner perhaps about 0.1 mil (2.5 microns). Thus a simple magnetic thickness gauge can easily determine which zinc coating method is used. Hot dip galvanized steel is suitable for outdoor use.
