Surface treatment on tungsten

2005

Dear Sir,

We have a component which has be flash nickel coated. The component consist of an MS block and a tungsten disc which are joined by copper brazing.

We tried to carry out the process with conventional Nickel coating process with reduced plating time as the flash coating shall be 0.5 to 2 microns of coating thickness. We found peel off from the tungsten surface, however the coating on MS part is found good. We are yet to measure the coating thickness.

Could you help us to solve the problem. Do we need to undertake any special cleaning or other surface treatment process.

Hello, Mr. Kumar. Your results are normal. Tungsten requires special surface preparation and striking baths, not the simple pretreatment that steel employs. See ASM Metals Handbook Vol. 5 for pretreatment suggestions and a number of different strike baths, including chromium or gold.
