Where to buy used copper anodes?
I need to find used copper anodes for an art installation that involves the electroforming process. I do not want new anodes for 2 reasons: am interested in the "imperfections" like the treeing effect I get, plus, I cannot afford to purchase new copper chunk anodes. I live in Columbus, Ohio, but the exhibition is in Chicago, IL, so if anyone knows of suppliers in these areas I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you,

I used to plate imperfections all the time using new anodes, but you can use use scrap copper from the junkyard. Treeing will come naturally in an acid copper bath. Just forget to add brightener, or plate at too high a current density, or plate for a few hours!

I really like the idea of using junkyard copper, but wonder about how to clean the copper so that it does not pollute the beautiful blue electrolyte. What can I use to clean the copper scrap anodes enough so that it will not make my electrolyte turn green? thanks, amy

What makes you think that the solution will turn green? You will have to experiment in a small beaker [beakers on eBay or Amazon [affil links] , but try some and let me know. You can "bag" the anodes in polypropylene cloth bags to keep sludge from the dissolving anodes from the rest of the solution.
