Is powder coating RoHS compliant?

Q. We are a casters supplier. We learned about RoHS requirements. We are considering using powder coating to replace zinc plating. We want to know if powder coating complies with RoHS.

A. Hi Lily. You may certainly do powder coating instead of zinc plating if you feel that it is a better solution for your particular situation.

But I wouldn't want a reader to misinterpret your question as implying that zinc plating is not RoHS compatible. Rather, zinc plating is RoHS compatible but you must use trivalent chromate conversion coatings or otherwise avoid hexavalent chrome in the conversion coating. Good luck.

A. Most of the powder coatings manufactured in the U.S. are RoHS compliant. The best way to determine this is to discuss it with powder coating manufacturers. At the same time, you can discuss which chemistry is best for your application, and then specify that product for your parts. This is a common practice in the industry. You can get a list of U.S. Manufacturers from the Powder Coating Institute. They also have an excellent booklet that is helpful to anyone interested in powder coating.

You can find them at www.powdercoating.org

A. Powder coating aluminium can involve a pretreatment of hexavalent chrome - so you need to specify that this is not used, as there are alternatives (not as good but it can be done)
