Electropolishing 17-4 after H900 heat treat

2005

Dear Sirs,

We are lab experimenting with electropolishing as a means of removal of surface discoloration on 17-4 stainless medical parts after an H900 heat treat.

Using a 75%phosphoric/25%sulfuric solution,we have seen good results, however, using a stainless cathode,(Can someone recommend a better cathode?) we are seeing extensive "smutting" of the cathode. Is this normal, or will it effect thelyic bath? Is there a way to monitor/test the condition of the bath?

Once the bath is spent, is there a cost effective way of reducing and neutralizing small quantity batches,(under 10 gallons) of solution?
