How can we blacken mild steel shotgun barrels?

Q. We are into manufacturing of shot guns. We want to blacken the gun barrels, although we are doing it with a very crude method , we would like to have the new method. Kindly suggest the formula to get the things carried out. Is some ready made stuff is available for that. Kindly mail us immediately. Any book concerning the same will be appreciated. We are ready to pay charges for the consultancy.

A. Yikes! Shotgun barrels of mild steel? Very dangerous. They should be chrome-moly, 4140 or equivalent. Forget chrome plating until you get some decent steel.
