What year did most US car and boat companies make the switch from using nickel to chrome?

It began in 1928 (see "A History of Chromium Plating" by George Dubpernell, Plating & Surface Finishing, June 1984) but as a guess it probably took about a decade to become universal.

I had heard rumors that chromium plating was developed at the University of New Hampshire before 1920, but was not patented because they did not anticipate a lucritive use for it. I was googling info about this when I found your site...?
