Stainless Steel Oxidation in Commercial Swimming Pools

I inspected a commercial swimming pool in South Florida and found all stainless ladders, submerged stainless light bezels, etc covered wth black oxidation below the water line. The pool is several years old and presents no other evidence of corrosion or chemical abuse. All stainless steel above the water line appears normal. The pool builder suggests the pool maintenance company used excessive acid. The pool maintenance company suggests the problem is electrolytic due to inadeqate grounding.

Anyone have an idea what might be going on, and how to correct it?

Joseph..black stains on Ss is indicative of excessive hydrochloric (muriatic) acid. This is simply remediated. Our company offers a kit marketed for Ss scratch remediation but also is perfect for remediation of this problem. It is called SCRATCH-B-GONE and it is available by calling our office. Good luck..P.S. if it was an electrical shortage problem (electrolisis), then you would see pitting and surface degrade on aluminum materials; i.e., ladder rungs. Barry Feinman, CEO
