How to color a threaded metal rod

Q. I have to paint a threaded metal rod, some washers, and a couple of bolts that will be screwed onto the rod. Is there a stain or other product I can use to change the color of the metal without clogging up the threads... Thanks in advance - Brian

A. If these items are zinc plated, Brian (and most such hardware is), they can be yellow or olive chromated, or they can be clear chromated and dyed in a variety of soft, pastel-like colors.
