Internal Thread Coating to prevent friction and galling
2005
I am looking for methods to coat or plate stainless steel and /or nickel alloy threaded components under high torque makeup. Reasons for treating the threads are to reduce friction during make up and reduce instances of thread galling.
Industry seems to have settled on coating the female (box) thread of a joint for most applications. Not sure the reason why.
A product I have seen work well has some sort of silver coating. I am not sure if this is electroplated, sprayed on, or otherwise.
I am also interested if anyone has had success using the Dupont product Teflon S for threaded applications.

Yes, it's electroplated silver. See concurrent letter 36965.

Sheldon,
To have what you ask for I will recommend a matte tin.

Hi Sheldon, I'm a Teflon coater in Spain and I can tell you that we have good success with the teflon coating on the threads.
