Rhodium plating residues on white cubic zirconia

We are a medium sized jewelry mfr in Thailand.
White cz-set 925 silver jewelry has to be rhodium plated for several customers. We normally apply a rhodium coating of 1 to 2 minutes. If, for some reasons (repair during production etc.) the rhodium plating has to be applied twice, the white stones start to appear grey-dull, as if coated by rhodium. How can this greyish appearance either be avoided or removed.

I suspect the stones are being burned in the repair process. Silver conducts heat very fast and the stones need to be protected from oxygen during the soldering operation.
