Platinum Aluminide Coatings on Turbine Blades

Q. I would like to know, why the crack develops when platinum aluminide is coated on the gas turbine blades? What are the implications of it. What might be the causes?

A. Is the coating itself cracked or is the base material cracked? This is a sacrificial coating usually diffused .0015" to .002" . We have found coating cracks due to impact damage. We have found that a silicon diffused aluminide coating works well for the application and is less expensive than the platinum
