Rhodium plating over copper without nickel

Q. For plating copper medals with rhodium, I know it is necessary to first plate it with nickel in order to avoid contamination of rhodium solution. I don't want to use nickel -- is there any other product to use instead?.

A. You are correct about the contamination. You can protect your rhodium plating solution by plating with gold first.

A. You, can plate white bronze, or yellow bronze, or any of the tin alloy (trialloy) over copper and then go for rhodium plating.

Q. Hello:
I bought a ring purported to be sterling silver (stamped 925, Thailand, FAO1 or FADI) set of 3 stacking rings which were set with semi-precious stones (C.Z., amethyst, blue topaz, citrine, peridot, and garnet). After less than a week of wearing the rings, they began to turn pink. I contacted the vendor who responded that the rings were sterling silver with gold plate over which rhodium had been plated. Does this sound right to you? Why would they plated rhodium over gold, especially with gold prices being currently so high?

Thanks!

A. If your ring turned to pink it is not gold but copper which they plated with rhodium.
