Coating for titanium
2005
1/ We are working on assemblies tha thave titanium and steel parts. Is there any kind of coating that could be applied to the parts after they are assembled.
The design is currently all steel parts that are assembled and then finish machined to the tight tolerance required in the assembly. We want to switch the major parts to titanium to reduce weight. Any suggestions on a coating that could be applied after the assembly and finish machining.
2/ If there is no solution to question number one. What are good coating for titanium for wear resistance?

I would suggest you consider PVD coatings, such as TiN and ZrN. These are deposited regularly on titanium by my company and others for wear resistance with excellent results. Because the coatings are very thin (3 to 5 microns), they don't affect the part tolerances.

Electroless Nickel can be plated on those substrates very uniformly with a 60RC hardness.

All depends on the dimensions and some structural peculiarities of your parts. Titanium doesn't like to be applied as substitution without any design correction. As for coating - the best practical way is oxidizing if some conditions are permitted. .
