How to maintain beautiful rich colors after clear coat

I GET BEAUTIFIL COLOR COMBINATIONS ON COPPER AND BRASS THAT DISAPPEAR ONCE A LACQUER CLEAR COAT IS APPLIED. CAN YOU SUGGEST ANOTHER PROTECTIVE COAT THAT WILL MAINTAIN THESE COLORS. WHAT HAPPENS TO RECRYSTALIZED COPPER IN TIME WITHOUT CLEAR COAT?
