Need the basics - info on plating for a paper

Dear sirs: I am a creative writer. I am writing a script to describe metal plating to a bunch of middle school and High School kids from Waterbury Ct. I am involved with the Waterbury Chambers Manufacturing Council. They are putting on a symposium for the kids on 3/8. It will be a mock up factory showing six different processes. Cad/cam, slitting. stamping plating, tool & die, and assembly.

I toured two plating companies yesterday. My notes are not as complete as I would like. I stopped at the plating vat. What actually takes place in there. I know the metal ions float off the anodes and onto the part to be plated. Is one negative and the other positive, and if so, which is which. Hope you can help. We are all doing this free of charge to help attact kids back into manufacturing jobs. We don't have as many as we once did, but we do have skilled people ready to retire and no one to replace than. Thanks again, in advance for your help.
