Color loss in bent areas of zinc plated hydraulic tubes

I am writing in regards to a situation we are running into with one of our customers. We plate hydraulic tubing in bulk prior to it being bent. Recently we have run into a severe amount of tubes suffering from color loss in the bent areas. We have excellent zinc adhesion but the chromate either lightens or totally is gone. Does anyone have any ideas on what will cause this.

What you are seeing, is the zinc coating popping off almost in a powdered form, right at the bends. If you take a non chromated zinc plated part and performed the bend, there should not be any powdering seen. That should dispel any thought of a deposit that is too thick. I would review the entire post plate sequence, and assure that every chromating parameter is being met. Pay special attention to the chromate that you are using and be sure that your supplier's recommendations are being adhered to stringently. Remember that with chromates, time, Temperature, pH, and Concentration will either make or break your final product.

Best regards to all at Industrial in Wahpeton.
