Special guns req'd for metallic powder coating?

2004

We are using hybrid powders for powdercoating of furniture items.

We have demand for metallic finishes. Presently we are using same powder coating guns for both these powders. Is there any adverse effect on powder coating guns by spraying metallic powders?

Are there special guns available for metallic powders.

I like to know what is the effect of metallic powders on wear off of powder spray gun parts.

You will wear out your soft parts at a quicker rate running metallic paint through them (=extra cost), it shouldn't hurt anything unless you don't change them when they get worn out because the expensive parts of the gun is what the wear parts are protecting. The metallics will probably become embedded in the delivery hoses so you might want to isolate them and use them for the metallics only or you'll start seeing little shiny flakes in your other paints. If you are already running both paints through the same equipment, you should be telling us what the adverse effects are!:) I tried to run metallics through some Tribo-static equipment once but can't remember what happened (technology has changed a lot since then), I don't think it worked.

WHEN SPRAYING GOLD METALLICS IT WILL LOOK LIKE IT HAS GOOD COVERAGE BUT WHEN IT COMES OUT OF THE OVEN THE METAL FINISH BLEEDS THROUGH THE FINISH. SHOULT I TRY A BASE COAT OF SAY SILVER UNDER THE GOLD? MIND YOU THIS ALSO HAS A CLEAR COAT OVER IT.

What kind of reading(mils) are you getting on your thickness gage in the transparent areas? I don't think you need a base coat, you just have to apply enough paint to get complete coverage which is relatively easy with metallic powders. The TDS should specify the minimum thickness recommended for your paint.

Q. Need to know what type of electrostatic paint gun is best to spray metallics with, especially silver met paint. I've been using a Wagner GM 2000 and the silver does not spray good through it.
