Nickel-chrome plated plastic discolored and pitted on 2000 Mazda

2004

I have a Mazda B4000 pick up 2000 year model that the front plastic mask nickel plated surface is getting discolored and pitted on its top surface.

How can I restore the finish?

How can this part reliability be deteriorated so rapidly within 4 years when the car has not been exposed to unexpected materials?

Some Mazda trim is nickel/chrome plated and holds up well. Mazda also uses some vacuum aluminized plastic which doesn't hold up at all. Just look at a series I 929. The 929 trim on the left side of the trunk lid will be bare plastic, and the MAZDA logo on the right side will be perfect. There really isn't any practical way to fix either, except by installing new parts. I suggest you write a strong letter of protest to Mazda. They *might* offer you some new trim...probably not.
