I have a pair of spurs that I need to blue or keep from rusting

I'm making a pair of spurs out of 1018 or mild steel. I would like to blue them or find a way to keep them from rusting. I would appreciate any help.

Thank you

Well as a blacksmith I'd first consider if the spurs will be for show or if they will be for use. First off you can use stainless rather than 1018, I would suggest doing so, esp. if they are for use. If you don't have a source of stainless, I suggest getting some wrenches from sears or a hardware store, work them at nothing below a orange heat. (make sure they are stainless) they will hold up a lot better than 1018. If they are for show I suggest getting them chrome plated. they will be very bright, but won't hold up to frequent use.

You can purchase a Birchwood-Casey cold bluing kit this on eBay or Amazon [affil links] from your local gun shop. All you have to do is follow the directions for a rich blue. -cheers!
