Zinc/Yellow Chromate vs Hot Dip Galvanizing
I have some small (11"x3"x4") metal parts that will be outside and exposed to the elements. I am trying to determine if zinc and yellow chromate coating will be as effective as more expensive hot dip galvanizing. I had read a report years ago (which I can not find) stating that the coating process lasted longer than the galv under a salt spray test but the AGA site said the salt spray test is not a good indicator of real world exposure. Any help? I'm really looking for pointers as to where to get documentation one way or the other.

Galvanising will last considerably longer.

Under these circumstances the protection is approx. proportional to the thickness of the Zn. Plating might give 10 microns, and galvanizing 80 microns. In general terms then, about 8 times the protection. Theres probably little if any difference in cost.
