A. Although it's out of print, "Preparation of Metals for Painting" by Samuel Spring [on on Amazonaffil links] is a book I've read that I can recommend as what you're looking for.

Other books that sound right, but which I personally haven't read are Rausch's "Phosphating of Metals" ⇦[this on Amazon or AbeBooks affil links] and Freeman's "Phosphating & Metal Pretreatment" ⇦[this on Amazon or AbeBooks affil links].
