HASL tolerance question
2004
We have a problem. Our customer specs out a hasl thickness of .00075 (±.00015). According to our analysis we cannot meet this spec. Our measurements are above this consistently. My question is to anyone who has any possible solutions to this problem?
Thanks,

David,
In my experience HASL is the least controlled surface finish for PCB. Neither thickness or planarity can be guarenteed. But I am happy to be proved wrong in this forum.
Other suggestions for your customer...
* For more surface control they might consider Ni/Au. With Immersion Au the Au is too thin to embrittle even the smallest solder joint.
* For a precise solder volume on the pad they could consider placing solder preforms during assembly. However the startup cost of preforms is high.
Sorry I can't be more help,
