Solution for wear on die casting
Q. I am looking for a coating or any treatment that are the best for wear resistance and a long last applied on A380 die casting aluminum parts. The parts are machined before treatment at 0.4 microns and the surface finish after must not to be more than two times rougher. I have already tried Electroless Nickel, Hard Anodizing and Hard Chrome on 6061-T6 but I don't think that I have found the good coating. So I know that the A380 will not give the same results. If you already tried a hardcoat on die cast aluminum part, could you gave me results or any specs about Taber test or others one.

A. Luke Engineering is a job shop hardcoater specializing in die-castings. Hardcoating is an electrochemical conversion of surface aluminum into aluminum oxide. The high percentage of alloying elements in diecastings tend to interfere with this process.This is particularly true of A380 whose main alloying elements of Si and Cu have conductivities significantly different than Al. The die-casting material 518, primary alloy Mg, allows for a much better hard anodic coating. However, due to other problems, few diecasters will work with this material. Luke Engineering has developed a hardcoating process especially for diecastings, Lukon DC, which overcomes many of these limitations. This coating is thicker, denser, and more wear resistant than the typical hardcoat on die-castings.
