Fuel Cell Capacitance

Hi. Work for Shuttle Program (NASA). Need some help in impeadance analyses for Orbiter Fuel Cell to characterize equivalent circuit model for KOH cell stack. If a fuel cell shares a load with a power supply, how do you protect the fuel cell from reverse current? (we saw this in lab)

Is there any real capacitance to absorb over voltage spikes?

I think, since you are only looking to be sure current only flows one way you'd need a diode, or something to that effect. This question seems kinda out of place here.
