Chemicals for chromium passivation experiment
My son who is in XII standard wants to do electroplating of steel surface and also chromium passivation for his science project. As I also do not know much about it, I will be happy if someone tells me about the chemicals and their quantity to make chromic acid solution used for the purpose. My friend has advised me to take help of this web site. Kindly also tell time, temperature, pH etc. for chromium passivation?

Here in the U.S., chemiphobia has such a grip on us that we are trying to teach a generation of students Chemistry while pretty much restricting their choice of chemical reagents to limes, Dr. Pepper, and Taco Bell sauce :-)
In your area, apparently such carcinogens and toxins as hexavalent chromium are acceptable for use in science projects! Where is some middle ground?
Maybe the middle ground would be for him to try nickel plating? This requires nickel chloride, nickel sulphate, boric acid, sacharrin, sodium lauryl sulphate (baby shampoo), and a plating book.
