Collector questions historical rifle barrel rust prevention
What rust preventative treatments were used to protect the barrels of American Civil War era rifles? The replicas and originals that I have seen appear to have a barrel chemical treatment that is more than just a layer of applied oil.

Except oil finish, exists only solutions: brown or black finish (chemical or by heat, who knows?!).
Good luck!
