Phosphate coating process and possible problems

Q. I would like a process flow diagram of the Phosphating process (Immersion) and more information on the Phosphate coating in Automotive manufacture.

A. I would suggest that you first define what your application is, and what you want from the phosphatizing. A good place to start is the ASM International Metals Handbook, Volume 5. It has a very good section on phosphatizing.

Hi Thulani. As implied by Jim's answer, "Phosphate coating in Automotive manufacture" is too vague. You'll probably need to name either the particular component or the type of phosphating process because manganese phosphating is used for oil-bathed engine components, whereas painted components may be either iron phosphatized (often a 3-step process, sometimes 5 steps), or zinc phosphatized (often a 7-step process). Good luck.
