Painting Surplus Zinc Plated Parts

Hello,

I have several surplus casters that are zinc plated and I want to paint them. I have used a cold galvanizing compound Cold Galvanizing Compound / Zinc Rich Paint in the past as a primer and then painted a color coat on top of it. I am unsure of the quality of the bond I get with this procedure. Is there a better way, or maybe a better primer or preparation procedure that will yield good results? Is there any way to remove the zinc coating entirely?

Thank you in advance.

Ideally you should take the casters to a plating shop, who can easily strip and re-plate them.

muriatic acid this on eBay or Amazon [affil links] Muriatic acid will remove zinc plating instantly, but when used in a non-controlled environment, you risk personal injury, environmental damage, harm to surrounding items from fumes, and damage to the item you are stripping. I am not suggesting that you personally don't know how to use it, Mr. Danninger, but a lot of other people will read this.
