Black nickel barrel plating process

2004

Q. Hello,

I would like to know if somebody has the knowledge or technical information about the barrel Black nickel plating process, my raw material is brass with different shapes and sizes. I have automatic line with the following process:
(1)Electrocleaner
(2)Rinses
(1)Activate
(2)Rinses
(1)Black Nickel
(2)Rinses
I would like to know which is the chemical composition in my black nickel tank; also pH, the plating time and voltage too.
Thanks for you help.

A. I don't think that's the ideal arrangement, Telesforo. You might be better served by a regular bright nickel plating tank, and then rinsing, and then black nickel as a 'topcoat' rather than as the main plating for the parts. Contact any of the plating chemical suppliers for a proprietary black nickel bath and its operating parameters rather than trying to reinvent it, but "Decorative Black Nickel Plating" by Wieczerniak and Tremmel, in the June 1982 issue of Plating and Surface Finishing may help. The MFIS CD-ROM references many other articles on black nickel plating.
