Cold Alternative to Black Oxiding

Q. We use Black Oxiding for most of the tooling we design and I wish to know any new method other than Black oxiding which can serve the purpose of this operation. Any coating which can come close to BO process also may be suggested and will try to this and inform the same. We are looking for an alternative cold process giving any colour coating to be close by 80% to black Oxiding properties on steel. Cost should also be comparative. Is Teflon coating the solution for the coating process? We are trying to experiment and if you could help us we will do the sample and send this to you for your advice.

A. Please see our FAQ on Black Oxide and Cold Blackening. These cold blackening alternatives, on a total cost basis, are probably competitive with black oxide. Personally, I feel they are not quite as good, but they meet many black oxide requirements without the dangers of the hot process.

A. First tell us why you want to go away from the black oxide process and then we might be able to suggest alternatives. Having some idea of what you are tryin to accomplish with the coating would certainly help also.
