Need coating product for exterior steel storefront to give steel aged look

Q. My firm is designing a steel storefront in an exterior mall in Irvine, California. We are looking for a manufactured product to finish the steel. We are specifically looking for a product to give the steel an aged (or patina) look, is there such a product available.

A. Regardless of the color or shading you choose, I don't think a simple oxidation coating like a patina will give plain steel sufficient corrosion protection. You'll make it the color you want but then it will rust. I think you'll need to electroplate it with some other metal and patina that metal.
