Removing Film from Brass Fireplace Screen Mesh
Q. Hello. I own a "solid brass" fireplace screen with the usual mesh (steel?). There's sort of a film on parts of the mesh I can't identify, and no product I have tried has removed it. In case it's Brasso ⇦ this on eBay or Amazon [affil links] I had used on the brass, can you tell me what I may use to remove it without ruining whatever the mesh metal is?

A. I don't know for sure what the metal is, but would assume it's steel. Steel is pretty robust so I wouldn't worry about "ruining" the steel, but it sounds like the finish, whatever it is, may already be ruined. Why not just paint the mesh with stove paint ⇦ this on eBay or Amazon [affil links] or equivalent? Good luck.

Q. I want to paint my old brass fireplace screen. What type of paint and also do I need to put a primer on.Iread that I should clean it first with a new grill brush. I also would like to paint the mesh curtain. What products should I use?
