Darken nickel marked with a laser

I am about to begin laser marking chrome plated items. The procedure will burn through the chrome and actually mark the nickel. I need something that will make the nickel mark as dark as possible. Can you help?

Thanks,

Black nickel might work. It tends to be a very dark grey rather than a true black. It also is a very picky bath to run.
