Painting new galvanized gutters

I am installing galvanized gutter on a barn. The costumer wants it painted, and I don't know if I can paint it immediately with galvanized primer or if I need to treat it first or let it weather for a while. What should I do to insure good adhesion?

You need an etch primer or you will not get much adhesion. Alternatively there are new silane based paints in some countries which gain good adhesion to fresh galvanizing. We have tested these with good results for 4 years so far.

Years ago, I worked for a sheet metal company. We etched new galvanized gutters with strong vinegar in bulk on eBay or Amazon [affil links] . We primed and painted. You might try this on a small piece or at least ask others opinion of this technique.
