How do I dissolve chrome or nickel for plating?

Greetings,

I've recently designed and built a part which I would like to have chrome or nickel finished. Rather than purchasing an expensive kit, I prefer to learn the process myself. I would like to know how to dissolve chrome or nickel into a solution for plating.
