Steel protection against sulfuric Acid

Q. We need to manufacture a drip tray for battery acid (sulfuric acid). The drip tray will be manufactured from 2 millimeter mild steel. Is there a paint or a coating that we can apply without having to sandblast the steel first?

A. Norbert,

There are a few alternatives before you. - Good cleaning is necessary. Sand Blasting is not mandatory. However the part must be rust and oil and dirt free before attempting the following

1) Epoxy coating.
2) lead plating
3) Rubber coating

These are three well proven coatings that are proof against Sulfuric acid from batteries.

A. Norbert,

It seems to me that over the past 55 years, the battery tray holders always seem to eventually corrode especially if you are putting on a lot of mileage.

The best 'paint' is not a paint but PVC plastisol ... where you heat the part, then dip into a liquid plastisol, let it dry (well, sort of), then heat it up in an oven to properly cure it. Not cheap. Not pretty. Very effective.
