Chrome plating on SS-304

For Stainless Steel 304, what is the minimum / maximum requirements for Chromium Plating? I am heard something like .0005" to .001". Is that true? The application is on a Ball Bearing, which are mounted in Dimple in the Housing. We just want to make the surface harder. Does it matter if have little bit too much Chrome plating?

Thanks,

That's probably not a bad range, and the low end is probably fine. That thickness is applied to such items as automotive shock absorber rods. The biggest issue is the hardness of the underlying ball. If it is really hard, .0005" is probably several times thicker than you need for moderate service; if it were soft, .0005" is several times less than what you need. But it's probably just about right for this case, based on the limited info you gave.
