Painting brass

I have a dining room brass chandelier I want to spray black. I've read your answers and want to spray paint but what type of primer do I use for best results and is it necessary to sand it first.

Just put it in the backyard, take out the light bulbs, and spray paint it.

Ed. note: It was weird while it lasted, Kyle, but for privacy we've removed your last names from the posting after the page got old.
