Aluminum Alloy Plating

Hi,

I am a postdoctoral researcher. I would like to electroplating of Al-5% wt.V alloy onto Ag rod(substrate) at near room temperature. Now I need to know, what kind of electrolytes should I use for this specific alloy plating? Also it would be better if I come to know about other relevant conditions, such as pH of solution, etc. I appreciate your advice and cooperation. Thank you.

Let us know when you have successfully electroplated pure aluminum, and how you did it, and then people may be able to advise how to add V to the mix :-)

Aluminum is too active be plated out of an aqueous electrolyte; you need to use molten salts or organic solvents. To my knowledge only one company in the world commercially electroplates aluminum, and they do it with organic solvents in a sealed environment that excludes the atmosphere.

Hi,

I am a postdoctoral researcher. In my research, I am trying to do electroplating with a particular alloy (very low concentration of secondary element) onto silver rod substrate. Previously I tried with Al-1wt.%V alloy, but it seems very dfficult to execute under reasonable conditions (Thanks finishing.com for valuable comments in this regard). I however, am now trying to electroplate with Cu-2wt.%Zn alloy onto Ag rod. Could you please, give me some instructions about bath, concentration, pH, current density and equipments? Thank you very much for your attention and cooperation.

Since you are doing a post-doc., you will have access to a good library. I suggest you get some textbooks on basic electroplating and you will find all your answers in there.

Mr Alamgir,

Please contact the Electroplating Association at Shanghai. There are more than one. There are a number of good reference Libraries if you can speak Chinese and get to know one Plating person with a degree . Beijing has a number of good plating shops and you should be able to find what you are looking for. China is full of books , but written in chinese , on such matters. Plating is " Tyen Too " in Chinese.
