How can I test for genuine plating?
I bought some supplies that are supposed to be silver plated (and gold plated too). I there any way for me to tell that my goods really have genuine silver or gold?

If it has a coating, it is very probably the real thing. That said, nothing was said about the purity or the thickness. You might find a pawn shop that could help you out with a few simplistic tests that are reasonably accurate and affordable. Professional testing is not practically affordable for your purposes, unless you are going to court.
