Information request for coatings on cylinders walls?
2004
Hello,
I am a last year student at the University of Gent in Belgium. For my final project I am looking for the different coating processes on the inside of engine cylinders. I would like some information like: How the process works; What are the compositions of the coatings, how are they brought on to the cylinder walls. I find it very difficult to get specified information about this subject from the internet. I hope someone can help me? I would be very happy with Titles of books in which I can find some answers on my questions.
Yours sincerely,

I feel your pain; it is very difficult to locate information like this unless and until someone writes a book on it, and it doesn't seem that that has been done yet. But keep checking the ASM International site at www.asm-intl.org because such a thing could happen any day. There are books, for example, about the alternative turbine blade coatings, the alternative surgical instrument coatings, etc. Lacking a book on cylinder walls plating, it becomes a matter of trying to find the information scattered among books on different surface treatment technologies, journal articles in journals you may not even have heard of, and websites which are essentially intended to sell things rather than to present educational technical discussions.
A common coating is nickel-silcon-carbide; one trade name is Nikasil. Hopefully if you start with those terms and phrases like
'cylinder coatings' you can find a lot of web pages, and sort the grain from the chaff.
