Magnesium Mated to Printed Circuit Board

I am designing an electronic enclosure which is to be made of thixomolded magnesium AZ91D. We will be fastening a PCB with exposed soldered (tin/lead) surfaces directly to the magnesium for electrical conductivity. The electronic enclosures are rated for use in indoor environments only (-10° to +50°C, 90% Relative humidity, non-condensing). What surface treatment for the magnesium do you recommend?

When electrical conductivity is necessary, the choices are quite limited, with electroless nickel plating being the most common. You will need to work with your molding/casting supplier to insure that the surface of the parts is adequate for the electroless nickel process.

Do not make electroless nickel, it will accelerate galvanic corrosion. Ask Oakite (Chemetall) about OXSILAN MG 0611.
