Sandblasting media for cast aluminum

2004

Hello,

I am in the process of prepping my motorcycle wheels for powder coating. The wheels are made of cast aluminum. Through my workplace I have access to a sandblasting hood that uses a glass media. I would like to know if this media is suitable for the wheels or if it is too harsh? Any help from you guys would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

I recently blasted a sand-cast aluminium Honda engine case using silica sand. It turned out great and there were no ill effects. Also, the sandblasted finish leaves a great foundation for powdercoat to adhere to.

This is useful feedback, and we thank you for it, Doug. It sounds like you were looking for a matte finish before powdercoat, and it sounds like Michael was too, so hopefully you helped him. But most people who are talking about wheels are looking for a bright reflective, polished finish--and I think sandblasting is poison for that. Correct me if I'm wrong.
