Which coating to use on motor shafts?
At Present I'm designing a motor shaft which works in a moist environment. Cost is a big factor so what are the types of steel and coating I can go for to avoid corrosion at minimum cost.

Motor shafts are sometimes cold rolled medium carbon steel but are often alloy steel for strength. It is not common to paint or electroplate them because tolerances are usually close. It is possible to black oxide and oil them, which would afford good looks and very moderate corrosion resistance without affecting the tolerancing.

An excellent sacrificial paint system for steels would be ones that contains aluminium.

Normally the motor shafts are zinc phosphated. But any idea how many hours of salt spray it should withstand? What is the notmal specification for phosphated motor shaft for salt spray test.
