How to keep copper roof non tarnishing

I manage a horse farm in central New York State. My employer also has a farm in New Jersey. My husband has just finished building a cupola with a copper roof for one of the barns. My employer likes the shiny copper look but does not like the green tarnished look which will come eventually. For his New Jersey farm he purchased a copper roofed cupola in Texas which has stayed shiny copper for the last ten years. How can we accomplish this? What type of process can be used to preserve the new copper finish.

Ms. Burnside,

I used a solution of shellac/rosin in denatured alcohol sprayed or brushed on copper printed circuit boards and the shiny finish has remained shiny as on day one even after 35 years! I live close to the sea and this method does indeed speak volumes of it's efficacy. Perhaps, you can try it.

It's cheap and easily applied. I suppose, a spray with clear synthetic lacquer should also accomplish the required protective layer.
