Kitchenwares mfgr. finds 302SS tarnishes in dishwasher

I have an item that is listed as polished 302SS. When I submit it to dishwashing tests (required) it turns a very dark matte gray and it is covered with a powdery residue that wipes off? What could be causing this reaction?

It sounds like you do not have stainless steel. I would have the alloy analyzed to see what it is. If it is 302SS there is something really bad in the dishwasher soap that you need to change.
