Student asks the adhesion mechanism for rubber on glass

I am a student at University of Cincinnati working on a project of rubber to metal bonding using a plasma polymerized primer film. The metal I use is 70-30 brass and the adherent is Natural Rubber. I am getting good adhesion but I want to understand the bonding mechanism. Please reply if you have any insights.

Thanking you,

First of two simultaneous responses --

Usually a copper sulfide layer is required for good adhesion. You have to look into the composition of your substrate or may be you can increase some sulfur this on eBay or Amazon [affil links] in the rubber compound during vulcanizing but it again depends upon the conditions and the final temperature of your curing process.

Sounds like you should be the one to ask re: plasma treated bonder sheets. Otherwise the internet is not short on adhesion theory - try Van der Waals bonding.

Good luck and keep at it!
